It’s a common misconception that orthodontic treatment is only for teenagers. While treatment can be most effective in adolescence, as the teeth and jaws are still growing, we also see many adult patients, thanks to the development of discreet orthodontic options such as Invisalign® clear aligners.

Our dentists may also recommend early orthodontics for younger children from around the age of 8 if we think this could reduce their need for braces or other corrective treatments later.

Orthodontics is a long-term treatment that can take anywhere from 6 months to several years, depending on how much straightening is needed. Whether you prefer fixed braces or removable aligners, these work on a similar process of applying gentle force to the teeth to slowly move them into a better alignment.

• Braces are fixed to your teeth by our dentists, who will check and tighten them at a series of regular appointments. We’ll advise you about any foods you may need to avoid and how to care for your braces and your teeth to avoid problems.
• Clear aligners can be removed when you eat and brush your teeth. While these can be a more convenient option, they also require a high level of patient compliance, which can make them unsuitable for younger patients.

When your treatment is complete, you will normally need to wear a retainer for a certain amount of time to help maintain your new, straighter smile.
