Who needs a crown?

A dental crown or cap is a custom restoration that covers a tooth to restore its strength or modify its appearance. Our dentists may recommend a crown for many different reasons, including:

  • Rebuilding a worn or damaged tooth
  • A substitute for a filling for a larger cavity
  • Strengthening a weakened tooth
  • Sealing a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Making cosmetic changes, such as reshaping a tooth
  • Covering a dental implant
  • Supporting a dental bridge

For more minor damage, our dentists may recommend an alternative treatment, such as bonding, fillings or cosmetic veneers might be the appropriate solution for you.

What to expect with a dental crown

Fitting a crown involves more than one appointment. The dentist will take an impression of the tooth that will be used to design your custom crown. They may first need to remove some enamel from the tooth to ensure the crown will fit comfortably and seamlessly.

It can take up to a week or more for your permanent crown to be made, during which time you’ll be fitted with a provisional crown to protect the tooth. Once your crown is ready, the dentist will check the fit, colour, bite and adjustment before bonding it to your tooth.

Who needs a bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that ‘bridges’ the gap where teeth are missing. Missing teeth may affect your appearance, your diet, your speech, and your overall oral health and wellbeing. Our dentists may recommend a bridge as an option for:

  • Single tooth replacement
  • Replacing several adjacent teeth
  • Full arch replacement supported by implants and or teeth

A bridge is a fixed alternative to removable dentures that also doesn’t need special cleaning. Another alternative to a bridge is a dental implant attached in the jaw.

What to expect with a dental bridge

Fitting a bridge involves more than one visit, as the bridge and supporting crowns need to be manufactured in a dental laboratory. The dentist will take impression of your teeth and mouth that will be used to design your custom restorations.

Most bridges use crowns for support, which will be fitted over the teeth on one or both sides. If you’re replacing a tooth at the front of your mouth, the bridge may be supported by clasps attached behind the neighbouring teeth. A bridge may also be supported by one or more dental implants.
