Why Is Gum Care Important?

Good dental care doesn’t end at your teeth. If bacteria in plaque build up around the gum line, they can infect and inflame the gums, leading to gum disease. Without prompt care, gum disease may eventually cause permanent damage, including gum recession, tooth loss, and bone loss in the jaw. Gum disease is also a risk factor for developing other health conditions, including heart disease and stroke.

Our dentists know how to spot the signs of gum problems, and we’re associated with Sydney’s leading specialists in periodontology to provide you and your family with the highest standard of care. To discuss our services or book an appointment at our local clinic, call us today on 02 9412 3805 or send us a message.

Why are my gums receding?

Gum disease can cause gum recession if it develops from gingivitis into more advanced periodontitis. Other signs of periodontitis can include painful gums, bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, tooth sensitivity, and teeth feeling loose or falling out.

Besides gum disease, receding gums can also have other causes, including:

  • Brushing your teeth too roughly or using a toothbrush with hard bristles
  • Injury to the gum
  • Misaligned teeth or mouth piercings wearing down the gum
  • Tobacco use

You should see a dentist about your gums if you have any discomfort or unusual symptoms. Gum disease can usually be reversed when it’s treated early, but delaying treatment can make the problem worse and prolong your discomfort.

What to expect from gum treatment

The first stage of any gum treatment is a comprehensive examination of your gums and mouth so our dentists can determine the best approach. The treatment they recommend will depend on what type of gum problem you have and its severity.

For gingivitis, our team will professionally clean and scale your teeth and gums to remove plaque and hardened tartar. More advanced periodontitis may require deeper cleaning of the gums, or surgery in some cases to remove pockets of bacteria, along with other treatments such as antibiotics to help control the infection.

If your gums have been damaged or worn down, we can discuss options such as gum grafting or gum rejuvenation to restore their appearance and reduce sensitivity. Gum grafting involves transplanting tissue, while gum rejuvenation involves loosening and guiding existing gum tissue over the exposed part of the tooth.
