Why Choose a Custom Mouth Guard?

Everyone’s bite is unique, and custom-fitted mouth guards provided by a dentist offer more protection than those bought over the counter in a sports store. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) and other organisations recommend using a custom mouth guard whenever there may be a risk of injury to the mouth.

Our dentists will design mouth guards to perfectly fit your bite or your child’s bite, helping to keep you safe and comfortable while enjoying your favourite pastimes. Our sports mouth guards are made from strong but flexible materials in a choice of colours. Contact us on 02 9412 3805 or send us a message to find out more.

Who needs a mouth guard?

Wearing a mouth guard is recommended during contact sports and other activities that involve a high risk of collision and injury to the mouth, face or jaw. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Rugby
  • Hockey
  • Soccer
  • Basketball and netball
  • Skateboarding
  • Boxing

A custom mouth guard fits more securely over your teeth than a generic mouth guard, helping to cushion and spread impacts and reduce serious injuries. It can also feel more comfortable to wear, won’t affect your breathing or athletic performance, and won’t come loose, which can be problems for poorly-fitted mouth guards.

If you or your child have braces, an uneven bite or missing teeth, a mouth guard custom made by our dentists will give you the snug and comfortable fit you need. We also provide mouth guards for other purposes, such as night guards to help prevent teeth grinding and TMJ.

What to expect at your mouth guard fitting

If you’re getting a custom mouth guard for the first time, or replacing an old or worn mouth guard, our dentists will ask you questions about the type of sports or activities you need it for and examine your teeth and bite to see if there are any special considerations. They will then take impressions of your teeth that are sent to a dental laboratory, where your custom appliance will be made from high-quality materials in a colour of your choice.

When your mouth guard is ready, we’ll call you back for a fitting appointment to check that it fits comfortably and securely. We’ll explain how to care for your mouth guard to prevent damage or warping and keep it safe and hygienic. We also encourage you to bring your mouth guard along on routine dental visits so our dentists can monitor its condition.
